Congratulations! To IM John Webster from Stoneville, NC as the 2014 Tennessee State Open 2nd Place Finisher.
Congratulations! GM Jim Morrison from Glasgow, KY as 4th Place and Teal Stanley from Greensboro, NC as 5th Place. Third, Fourth, and Fifth place were tied as 3rd Place but separated by honor points.
Congratulations! Alex Holmes from Sellersburg, IN as First Place winner of the Major Division.
Congratulations! John Estes from Rockvale, TN as the 2nd Place winner of the Major Division and the Highest 2014 Tennessee Majors Player who received a $40 bonus prize.
Congratulations! John Acker from Columbus, OH who took 3rd Place and Mike Choate of Madisonville, TN won 4th Place.
Congratulations! Trey Stanley won the Minors Division by honor points over a 2-way tie with Grover Minor for First Place. They are both from Greensboro, NC. Congratulations! Bobby Rice from Columbia, KY as Third Place and Vonda Jones from Talbott, TN as Forth Place and recognized as the Highest Tennessee Minor Player who also got a $20 bonus for her achievement.
Congratulations! Ali Davis from Crossville, TN as the youngest player and this 8 year old is recognized as our Tennessee Youth Player. This was Ali's first tournament who attended the tournament with her Mother and 7 year old girl friend Sarah Herrick who also received $20 from the Tournament Director, Frank Davis.
Frank Davis opened the tournament by welcoming a field of 41 players from 8 states that registered to play. There were a number of other checker players who visited but elected not to play. Larry Pollard, Hugh Burton, Steve Watkins, Ernie Stephens, Henry Cox, and several others I didn't catch their names. Ted Williamson gave our opening invocation. Frank reviewed the Lindsay and Hickman accounts which are secure in deposit accounts at F&M Bank in Clarksville, TN.
Frank opened the floor for players to announce their upcoming tournaments: Lexington, KY Checker Club will meet March 28th; Illinois State - Apr 5 & 6; Missouri State 3-Move - Apr 12; Greensboro Open - Apr 26; West Tennessee Strawberry - May 9 & 10; North Carolina Open - May 16 & 17 was mentioned; as well as the National is scheduled for the week of July 23rd -thru- 27th at “BluegrassMagic Gameshop” in Louisville, KY. (Calendar)
John Acker announced his intentions to run for ACF President and Alex Moiseyev as Player's Representative. John spoke on what he thought should be implemented to improve and promote checkers.
Frank recognized Ken Christian for the excellent job of gathering up plenty of door prizes supplied by several local merchants, Wilson County Visitors Center, Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, and Wilson Bank & Trust, all in the form of merchandise for door prizes and arranging player's discounts & coupons for the tournament. Players' names are randomly drawn from a hat until all door prizes are given out.
Tournament rules were reviewed, we voted to re-pair opponents so that it could only occur in the last round when necessary (one time). Frank indicated if a game is not completed on time, then a continuation of a move per minute for up to 10 minutes occurs, if the move per minute does not create a decision, then the referee (Frank Davis) will make a decision for the results. He would make a judgment call on overtime game endings or elect another Master to help him decide the results, so as to stay on schedule. If a computer analysis was requested by both Master players, it should show a KingsRow's score value of 60 points for the position to be considered a win.
Other rules were reviewed such as: player may request their 1st game completed by the referee's decision so their 2nd game of that round starts on time for equal time & fairness; a 3 point bye round would be awarded as the first bye, thereafter to the lowest opponent; only two points per multiple byes will be awarded; if a player is 15 minutes late, then the game will be forfeited; if a player is 1 hour late or more, then both games will be forfeited; 4 points for a forfeit (2 per game) (Posted Rules)
Frank Davis opened the floor for discussion to amend a standard TN Open players' rule that the winner of a division moves up for the next three years. A motion, second and carried that a player who has played in a higher division may play down if his performance has been mediocre in the higher division regardless of his rating. This exception was made with the aging player in mind who is having difficulty playing at his past level of skill; otherwise, a player's current rating should indicate where a player should play.
We appreciated the donations and contributions which totaled $5,035.00 for the total cash prize fund. This was displayed on the bulletin board indicating all donations and fund amounts. Pay-Out is a few dollars more than posted prize fund because Frank rounds up to whole $'s during pay out.
Wives and player friends attending were: Sue Tucker, Mickey Webster, Linda Choate, Carol Williamson, Carolyn Minor, Carol Estes, Gladys Rice, Mary Frances Harben, Mrs. Bobby Blankenship, Shirley Lerum, Mary Davis, Paralee Shultz, Annie Webster, Bernice Powell, Carol Estes, Mrs. Billy Perry, Otis Jones, Hugh & Peggy Burton, and several others I can't recall also attended the tournament.
Management at Days Inn again confirmed their appreciation for the TN Open venue by providing pizza and soft drinks on Friday evening which everyone (players, spouses, & family) enjoyed! This makes the eighth year TN Checker Association has chosen this location after moving it from Best Western Executive Inn, Lebanon in 2006 which ended that long time venue. I have recently learned this was provided by our director/sponsor, Frank & Mary Davis.
We appreciate Frank Davis, Tournament Director and Referee in addition to Mary Davis, scorekeeper who did a fantastic job as usual. We really appreciate these well run "ideal model" tourneys.
Sunday service was an enjoyable one with a performance by the Williamson Family who played & sung ole time gospel, followed by a message from Ted Williamson about how you can control temptation by reading and knowing the scriptures. The WORD is our instructions to all problems and the answer how to have salvation and live a moral life. We demonstrated our appreciation by taking up a $275 collection for the Williamson Family and Frank & Mary also gave a $100 check.
We collected several ACF membership renewals.
Most players enjoyed at least several meals with each other at either Shoney's breakfast & lunch buffet, Cracker Barrel, Applebee's, Sunset, or Demo's.
A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended.
Congratulations, Alex!
